Third Trimester Sleep Problems: What’s Keeping You Up at Night (and How to Fix It)

Sleep in the third trimester can feel almost impossible. Between physical discomfort, frequent bathroom trips, and a constantly growing belly, even the most exhausted nights don’t always lead to real rest.

If you’re finding it harder to fall asleep-or stay asleep-you’re not alone. These are some of the most common third trimester sleep struggles I’ve experienced(and heard from other moms), along with what actually helped me get more comfortable and rest a little easier.

Why Sleep Gets So Hard in the Third Trimester

As your body prepares for labor, everything starts to shift-physically and hormonally. Increased pressure, baby movement, and discomfort all play a role in why sleep becomes more disrupted during this stage.

Common Third Trimester Sleep Struggles (and What Helped Me)

Difficulty Getting Comfortable

By the third trimester, finding a comfortable sleeping position can feel like a nightly challenge. Between your growing belly, hip pressure, and back pain, it can take forever just to settle in.

What helped me:

  • A full-body pregnancy pillow for support
  • Soft, breathable bedding to stay comfortable (cooling sheets)
  • Mattress topper

Frequent Bathroom Trips

It feels like the second you get comfortable, you have to get up again. Increased pressure on your bladder makes nighttime bathroom trips constant.

What helped me:

  • Limiting fluids right before bed (but staying hydrated during the day)
  • Nightlight
  • Slip-on slippers

Hip & Lower Back Pain at Night

Lying on your side for long periods can put pressure on your hips and lower back, making it hard to stay asleep.

What helped me:

  • Pregnancy pillow to keep hips aligned
  • Rotating sides throughout the night
  • Mattress topper for extra cushion
  • Gentle stretching before bed

Restlessness & Tossing and Turning

Even when you’re tired, your body can feel restless. This can come from discomfort, hormones, or just not being able to fully relax.

What helped me:

  • Magnesium lotion or spray before bed
  • Warm shower or bath to relax muscles
  • Keeping the room cool and comfortable
  • White noise to help stay asleep longer

When to Mention It to Your Doctor

While sleep struggles are very common in the third trimester, it’s important to mention anything that feels extreme-like severe insomnia, trouble breathing when resting, or consistent pain that prevents sleep. Your doctor can help make sure everything is progressing safely and comfortably.
