Why Everything Hurts in the Third Trimester (and How to Find Relief)

The third trimester is when everything really starts to feel real-and physically, it can be a lot. As your baby grows and your body prepares for labor, new aches and pains can show up daily. Some are expected, some can feel surprising, and almost all of them can be uncomfortable.

I wanted to share the most common third trimester pains I’ve experienced (or heard consistently from other moms), along with what actually helped them feel more comfortable.

Physical Pressure & Hip Pain

As baby drops lower, the pressure in your pelvis can feel intense-almost like a heavy weight pulling downward. I noticed this the most when walking, standing too long, or even just rolling over in bed. Hip pain can also sneak in from the added weight and side sleeping.

What helped me:

  • Belly support band to take pressure off while walking
  • A good pregnancy pillow to keep hips aligned at night
  • Sleeping with a pillow between my knees
  • Taking breaks from standing for long periods

Lower Back Pain

My lower back pain developed around 18 weeks pregnant for me but by no means did it lighten up in the third trimester. Between posture changes, added weight, and core muscles working overtime, it’s easy to feel constant tension or soreness in your lower back.

What helped me:

  • Belly band for extra daytime support
  • Lumbar support pillow when sitting
  • Heating pad on a low setting
  • Gentle stretching or prenatal movement

Since I started experiencing a lot of this discomfort in my second trimester, I already had many of these products going into the third-which helped so much as things intensified. I also followed gentle YouTube workouts, like ‘Pregnancy Pilates with Callie’, which helped relieve tension and keep my body moving comfortably.

Round Ligament Pain

This one can feel sharp and sudden-especially when standing up quickly, rolling over, or moving too fast. It’s caused by your ligaments stretching to support your growing belly.

What helped me:

  • Moving slower when changing positions
  • Supporting my belly when getting up
  • Light stretching to ease tension
  • Avoiding sudden twisting movements

Swelling (Feet, Ankles & Hands)

Swelling is extremely common in the third trimester, especially later in the day. I noticed it most in my feet and ankles, and sometimes even in my hands.

What helped me:

  • Compression socks for circulation
  • Elevating my feet whenever possible
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Wearing comfortable, non-restrictive shoes

When to be mindful:

Swelling is normal in late pregnancy, but sudden or severe swelling-especially in the face or hands-should be checked by your doctor, especially if paired with headaches or vision changes.

Rib Pain & Tightness

As baby grows upward, you may start feeling pressure in your ribs-sometimes even sharp little kicks that take your breath away.

What helped me:

  • Sitting upright instead of slouching
  • Stretching gently to create space
  • Wearing loose, comfortable clothing
  • Adjusting positions frequently

Leg Cramps

Random leg cramps-especially at night-can come out of nowhere and be surprisingly painful.

What helped me:

  • Staying hydrated throughout the day
  • Magnesium lotion or supplements (doctor-approved)
  • Stretching before bed
  • Flexing feet when cramps start

Final Thoughts

The third trimester can feel like a lot, but most of what you’re experiencing is your body preparing for baby. Give yourself grace, rest when you need to, and lean on small things that bring relief. You’re so close to the finish line.
