What I’m Packing in My Hospital Bag: The Ultimate Family Checklist

As your due date gets closer, one of the most exciting (and slightly nerve-wracking) milestones is packing your hospital bag. I’ve heard from so many moms that having everything ready ahead of time can make those last few weeks feel so much calmer.

When Should You Pack Your Hospital Bag?

Most doctors recommend packing your hospital bag around 32-36 weeks of pregnancy so you’re prepared if labor starts earlier than expected. Having your hospital bag ready ahead of time can help you feel less stressed when contractions begin or when it’s time to head to the hospital. I personally want everything packed and ready to go so we can simply grab the bag, install the car seat, and focus on welcoming our baby.

What to Pack in Hospital Bag for Mom

Packing your hospital bag for yourself ahead of time can help you feel more calm and prepared when labor begins. While hospitals provide some basic supplies, bringing your own comfortable clothing, toiletries, and small comfort items can make your stay much easier. These are the hospital bag essentials I’m packing to stay comfortable during labor and recovery.

  • Comfortable labor gown or oversized nightgown
  • Non-slip socks or slippers
  • Loose going-home outfit (think soft leggings or loose dress)
  • Nursing bras or tanks
  • Extra-large underwear
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, deodorant, lip balm, hair ties)
  • Phone charger with a long cord
  • Portable fan or handheld fan for labor
  • Snacks and electrolyte drinks
  • Pillow from home
  • Peri bottle, pads, or postpartum essentials (though most hospitals provide these)

Labor & Recover Extras I’m Packing

A few additional items I’m packing in my hospital bag that can help with comfort and pain relief during labor and postpartum recover

Labor comb
Many women use a labor comb during contractions by squeezing it in their hand. The pressure can help redirect pain signals and provide a simple form of natural pain relief.

What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Baby

Hospitals usually provide diapers and basic newborn care items, but I still like to pack a few special things for our baby. Bringing a couple newborn outfits, swaddles, and a going-home outfit helps make those first moments feel even more special. These baby essentials are what I’m including in our hospital bag to keep our little one cozy and ready for their trip home.

  • 1-2 sleepers
  • Going-home outfit
  • Soft swaddle blanket
  • Baby hat or bow
  • Car seat installed in car
  • Baby announcement sign/outfit (optional but fun for photos)
  • Extra blanket

Things People Forget to Pack for Baby

Swaddle blanket
You’ll likely learn how to swaddle at the hospital, but having your own makes it easier to practice and use at home. It also doubles as a nursing cover, burp cloth, or lightweight blanket.

Baby nail file or mittens
Newborn nails are surprisingly sharp and babies can scratch their faces within hours.

Pacifier (if you plan to use one) & clip
Some hospitals provide them and some don’t. Having one just in case can be helpful during procedures or soothing.

Backup outfit in different size

Your baby could potentially already be size 0-3 month instead of newborn on day one.

What to Pack in Hospital Bag for Your Partner

If your partner or support person will be staying with you during labor, packing a few essentials for them can make a big difference. Labor can sometimes last longer than expected, so having snacks, comfortable clothes, and a few personal items helps them stay comfortable and ready to support you. These hospital bag essentials help your partner stay prepared throughout labor and delivery.

  • Change of clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Phone charger
  • Snacks
  • Camera (if not your phone)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Massage oil or lotion (for labor support)
  • Extra socks & underwear
  • Chapstick for mom
  • ID insurance card
  • Birth plan copies
  • Cash (vending machines)
  • Folder for paperwork
  • Portable charger
  • Headphones
  • Pediatrician contact info
  • Empty bag for hospital supplies

Things People Forget to Pack for Dad / Support Person

A pillow and blanket
Hospital pillows are terrible and they rarely give enough blankets for partners.

Flip flops or slides
Easy shoes for walking around the hospital.

A sweatshirt or hoodie
Labor and delivery rooms are often freezing cold.

Optional Comfort Items

These aren’t necessities, but many moms say they help the hospital feel a little more like home.

  • Essential oil roller or calming spray
  • A cozy robe
  • Makeup bag or hair styling tools for photos
  • A folder for hospital paperwork

Packing early gives you peace of mind so when labor starts, you can focus on what really matters – meeting your baby.
